What We Believe

Section 1: The Word of God

We believe the Scriptures, comprised of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments,1 are the inspired Word of God,2 inerrant in the original writings, complete as the revelation of God’s will for salvation, and the supreme and final authority in all matters to which they speak.3 We further believe in the literal, historical, and grammatical method of interpretation, applied under the illumination of the Holy Spirit.4

  4. 1 Corinthians 2:9-12, Hebrews 4:12

Section 2: The Trinity

We believe that there is one, and only one, living and true God.1 He is a Spirit,2 infinite,3 eternal,4 and unchangeable,5 in His being,6 wisdom,7 power,8 holiness,9 justice,10 goodness,11 and truth.12 He alone possesses immortality; He dwells in unapproachable light and is incomprehensible.13 God’s knowledge is exhaustive; He fully knows the past, present, and future, independent of human decisions and actions.14 He does everything in accordance with His perfect will,15 though His sovereignty neither eliminates nor minimizes our personal responsibility.16

There are three persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one God,17 the same in essence, equal in power and glory.18

Section 3: God the Father

We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power, and love.1  We believe He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of humanity, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.2

  1. John 4:24, 1 John 1:5
  2. John 3:16, 1 Peter 5:6-7

Section 4: Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is God’s eternal Son and has precisely the same nature, attributes, and perfections as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.1 We believe further that He is not only true God, but true man, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.2 We also believe in His sinless life, His substitutionary atonement, His bodily resurrection from the dead,3 His ascension into heaven, His priestly intercession on behalf of His people,4 and His personal, visible return to earth in glory.5

  3. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  4. Hebrews 4:14-15
  5. Revelation 19:11-20:6

Section 5: Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit, His personality, and His work in regeneration, sanctification, and preservation.1 His ministry is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and implement Christ’s work of redeeming the lost and empowering the believer for godly living and service.2 We believe the Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to believers as He wills for the common good.3 No gift signifies His baptism or filling, nor does any gift provide authoritative revelation beyond what has already been revealed in the Holy Scriptures.4 Life in the Spirit includes trials and does not guarantee physical health, material wealth, nor confirming outward signs.5

  2. Acts 1:8
  3. Romans 12:4-8, 1 Peter 4:10-11, 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
  4. 1 Corinthians 14:37
  5. 2 Corinthians 1:3-6, 4:7-12, 12:10; 2 Timothy 3:12

Section 6: Man

We believe God created Adam and Eve, male and female, in the image of God and free from sin.1 We further believe all of humanity are sinners by nature and choice and are therefore spiritually dead.2 We also believe that those who repent of sin and trust Jesus Christ as Savior are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.3

  1. Genesis 1:26-27
  2. Romans 5:12
  3. Acts 2:38

Section 7: Marriage and Sexuality

We believe that marriage is sanctioned by God1 and joins one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union.2 We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to each other.3 We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and woman.4 We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery,5 fornication,6 homosexuality,7 lesbianism,8 bisexual conduct,9 bestiality,10 incest,11 pornography,12 and attempting to change one’s biological sex or otherwise acting upon any disagreement with one’s biological sex13) is sinful and offensive to God.

We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ.14

We believe that every person must be afforded Godly love, compassion, kindness, respect, and dignity. Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the doctrines of this church.15

  15. 1 John 4:11, Ephesians 4:29, Colossians 3:8-10

Section 8: Salvation

We believe in salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.1 We further believe that this salvation is based upon the sovereign grace of God, was purchased by Christ on the cross, and is received through faith, apart from any human merit, works, or ritual.2 We further believe salvation results in righteous living, good works, and proper social concern.

  1. Ephesians 2:8-10
  2. Romans 5:10

Section 9: The Church

We believe that the universal, or invisible, church1 is the spiritual body of which Christ is the head.2 The universal church consists of all persons who have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit.3 We believe God commands His people to walk together in local, or visible, churches for their mutual edification and public worship.4 These visible churches are autonomous,5 and consist of members who have been immersed upon their credible profession of faith6 and have associated themselves for worship, for instruction, for evangelism, and for service.7 We believe the ordinances of the local church are believer’s baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper.8 We also believe in fellowship with churches of like faith, and the mutual submission of believers to each other in love.9

  2. Ephesians 1:22-23, 5:23; Colossians 1:18

  9. 1 Corinthians 3:9, 1 John 1:7, Ephesians 5:21

Section 10: Separation of Church and State

We believe God has ordained civil government to be under Him and over the people for His own glory and the public good. To this end He has armed it with the power of the sword to encourage those who do what God deems good and to punish those who do what God deems evil.1 Christians may serve in the civil government.2 As citizens of heaven and free people, they are to honor civil authorities and submit in all things commanded by the government that are not contrary to the revealed will of God.3 Christians are to make supplications, prayers, and intercessions for all who are in authority, so that they may live quiet and peaceful lives, godly and dignified in every way.4 God has given to the church alone the task of proclaiming the gospel, and so the church must not resort to civil power to carry out its commission. The church exercises its ministerial authority by pursuing eternal ends through eternal means.5 A free church in a free state is the Christian ideal. This implies the right of free and unhindered access to God on the part of all people, and the right to form and propagate opinions in the sphere of religion without interference by the civil power.6

  1. Romans 13:1-4
  2. Luke 3:14
  3. Philippians 3:20, 1 Peter 2:12-17, Romans 13:5-7, Acts 4:19-20, Matthew 22:15-22
  4. 1 Timothy 2:1-2
  5. Matthew 28:18-20
  6. Matthew 22:21, John 8:36

Section 11: Christian Conduct

We believe that the supreme task of all believers is to glorify God in their lives; that their conduct should be blameless (according to God’s Word) before the world; that they should be faithful stewards of their possessions; and they should seek to realize for themselves the full stature of maturity in Christ.1

  1. Ephesians 4:22-24, Romans 8:28-29

Section 12: Last Things

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the saved and lost, the eternal existence of all people either in heaven or hell, and in divine judgments with rewards or punishments.1

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:22, Revelation 20:11-15
